Enos became the first chimp to orbit the earth on november 29, 1961, aboard a mercury atlas rocket. In 1959, the soviet space program took another step forward with the launch of luna 2 1961 before the soviets were able to pull ahead with gagarin's launch. Before humans went into space the chimps were used to test the effects of space flight.
